I have been reading loads of threads about loss of power on the TDi's. One of the threads mentioned that he had air bubbles in the clear fuel line I have noticed the same thing on mine and my power loss is also intermittent. I have replaced all the small vacuum hoses to the turbo actuator air filter box boost control solenoid etc. I have also changed my Maf and checked for movement on my actuator arm it moves approx 10 mm can be seen to move when revving the engine and also moves out when switching the engine off so I dont think the turbo control vanes are sticking. Anyway I am going to change the fuel filter and check where possible air leaks could be but how do you purge the air out of filter after replacing it. Any help would be appreciatted!!!

have you done a diagnostic scan, power loss very poor performance or limp mode sudden loss of power restart engine and all is well?

Not done a scan yet, but problem does not go away after an engine restart if anything I have no power for 99% of the time and then will occasionally get boost loads of power and then hit 3000 rpm and back to no power again, I can then turn the engine off and back on and still no power? Dont get any warning lights on the dash when this happens and glow plug light does not flash suggesting an engine managment problem? Its a mystery.

Which engine is it? My old 110 bhp always had bubbles in the fuel pipe and it didn't seem to bother it but I did onetime have a similar problem but when the power went it made a noise like an old taxi. I think I eventually traced it down to the needle lift injector on cyl. 3 but it cleared itself after I accidentally put in about 5 L of unleaded and topped it up with diesel. If I had allowed the 'experts' loose on it it would have cost me Edited by Scorpiorefugee

My GTD always had air in the lines, after reading online I thought this was the cause of my complete power loss I kept getting. Until I took it to the experts and they found it was the cable that powers the fuel stop solenoid was loose/corroded.

Further reading/advice suggested that the VW diesel engines are not susceptible to problems from air in the fuel lines, where a lot of others are. This is because they bleed off the air in the pumps before it can cause problems, I believe they still do with the latest models.

Change the fuel filter, its probably not been changed in eons.

Self purging AFAIK

Did they replace the solenoid or just clean the corrosion off it? I have power loss all the time apart from on the odd occasion when I seem to get lots of power it will then rev up to 3000 rpm and then its like an off switch has been thrown and I lose the power again did your GTD behave in the same way? I have tried replacing all the small vacuum hoses, MAF sensor and cleaned the EGR valve non of thse have resolved the problem. I look forward to hearing from you many thanks for the imput.

They just replaced the electrical cable to the fuel stop solenoid. Basically what was happening is vibrations were making it break contact, thus cutting power to the solenoid and the magnetic force keeping it open is lost and cuts the fuel. It happened @ 70mph on the M40, and 5mph leaving a customers site and was just a bad connection.

Does the cable go to thefront of the fuel pump, when it broke contact did you just lose power or did the engine cut out altogether? thanks for your response I will get to the bottom of this mystery if its the last thing I do lol!!
